Hearing Impaired Base (HIB)
Head of Hearing Impaired Base
Mrs C Simms
The Hearing Impaired Base serves the Blaenau Gwent, Monmouth, Newport and Torfaen unitary authorities and welcomes students who have a hearing impairment and a Statement of their Special Educational Needs (SEN). Some students may have an SEN in addition to their hearing loss. The students have varying degrees of hearing loss; they may be oral communicators, use sign language or use a combination of sign and speech. Students are taught by Teachers of the Deaf in the resource base and supported in mainstream lessons by sign support assistants. The percentage of integration into mainstream lessons is determined by individual needs.
A Speech and Language Therapist visits the unit weekly and a British Sign Language tutor delivers timetabled BSL lessons.
The base has a successful signing choir who has previously performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall and St David’s Hall, Cardiff. The students benefit from close links with other hearing impaired bases such as Nant Celyn Primary School in Cwmbran, Llanishen High School, Cardiff and St. Cyres, Penarth.
