Dear Year 11 Parent/Carers
Following the Education Minister, Kirsty Williams’ announcement yesterday we now know that whilst exams will not take place as intended in a timetabled block next summer:
- Instead of exams, schools will take forward teacher-managed assessments
- These will include externally set and marked assessments that take will place in a classroom environment.
The rationale for the Welsh Government is to ensure “fairness across the system” and a “transparent and robust” approach to assessment for the year.
Lots of the details of this announcement are not yet clear. Guidance and supporting materials will apparently be given to schools at the start of the spring term.
As we have stressed to the pupils everything that they complete between now until the end of the year will help their teachers provide evidence towards their final outcomes. We have shared the information we have with the pupils in Year 11 and hope they are able to give their utmost throughout the year in order to achieve the best results that they possibly can. At the same time, their wellbeing remains our priority.

We shall update you as and when we have further clarification regarding the detail of these arrangements going forward.
We hope your families stay safe and well.
