The Physical Education department at Cwmbran High School is situated in the Leisure Centre where we have access to a sports hall, gymnasium, tennis/basketball/netball courts, fitness suite, full size swimming pool, dance studio, boxing suite, a full size Red Gravel area, a full size football pitch and a full size rugby pitch.
As a department we value the importance of Physical Education and strive to promote physical activity and it’s importance in leading a healthy and active lifestyle. To achieve this we provide opportunities for students to participate a variety of activities and aim to deliver lessons that are of high quality, interesting and suitably challenging to all students.
At KS 3 and 4 students have the opportunity to participate in a range of competitive activities, health related activities, outdoor and adventurous activities and creative activities. Therefore, pupils will typically participate in rugby, football, netball, basketball, hockey, gymnastics, dance, swimming, lifesaving, Orienteering, fitness classes, athletics, cricket, welsh baseball and short tennis.
In addition to a varied curriculum programme of study, with the support of our 5×60 Officer we also offer students an extensive extra curricular programme. This consists of a range of competitive, non-competitive, health related activities and leadership qualifications (Young Leaders award, Sports Leasers award) which are offered to students during lunch times and after school. In terms of competitive sport boys and girls compete in local, regional and national competitions in a variety of sporting activities throughout the Autumn/Winter, Spring and Summer term.
For those students that have a keen interest in sport and health and wellbeing we offer a range of Level 2 examination courses that students may wish to follow as an option subject in KS 4 (Yrs 10 & 11). We currently offer 2 courses to students and strive to ensure that students who choose sport as an option are studying the course that they will find most interesting and suitably challenging. The courses we offer are Level 2 BTEC Sport and GCSE PE.
