The Hearing Impaired Base serves the Blaenau Gwent, Monmouth, Newport and Torfaen unitary authorities (with some students attending from Caerphilly if appropriate) and welcomes Deaf students with a Statement of their Special Educational Needs (SEN). Some pupils may also have an additional learning need. The pupils have varying degrees of deafness and may be oral communicators or use BSL/SSE. The children are taught by Qualified Teachers of the Deaf in the resource base and supported in mainstream lessons by sign support assistants. The percentage of integration into mainstream lessons is determined by individual needs and all pupils are involved in every aspect of the school community.
The base has a successful signing choir who has previously performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall and St David’s Hall, Cardiff. The pupils benefit from close links with other hearing impaired bases such as Nant Celyn Primary School in Cwmbran, Llanishen High School, Cardiff and St. Cyres, Penarth.
Some students have Speech & Language Therapy provided by a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist who attends the base weekly. A British Sign Language tutor delivers timetabled BSL lessons.
